The University of the 3rd Age. (U3A)
The U3A is an international organisation whose aim is to provide an environment for people who are retired, to continue the learning process by sharing their knowledge, interests or skills, with like minded people.
Within the U.K. individual U3As have been set up by local communities and the Exeter U3A is one of these.
The concept of U3A is totally informal. There are no exams, no
qualifications to be gained and no certificates. However, those who enjoy learning and social activities and who feel that age is not a reason to cease having an intelligent participation in life, will find membership of the Exeter U3A a stimulating experience
Members meet on the 4th Thursday of each month in the Music Room of the Exeter Central Library for coffee and a chat followed by a talk on a different subject each month.
At each monthly meeting a news update is issued to all who attend, coupled with the programme for the forthcoming month.
There are almost twenty different interest groups currently in operation. They include, for example, History, Languages, Current Affairs, Poetry and ‘Out and About’, with more in the pipeline. Participation in these activities give the members an opportunity to widen their circle of friends.
Members may participate in whichever groups are of interest to them. Where specific demands are not met, members are encouraged to come forward to form new groups.
