History group
This group meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month from 2.30 to 4pm in Exeter College.
Every month a member of the group presents a talk about a historical event or persons,
or shows a video. I am very grateful to those members who volunteer or are gently cajoled
into giving talks. This makes the history group a true reflection of the U3A spirit.
The average attendance over the past two years is 10.
Italian conversation group
This group now meets once a month for 1½ hours from 5pm. The day is always Tuesday,
but the date does vary according to occasional absences or members' holidays.
The meetings will always be held on the date stated in the newsletter. Our programmes
are very simple, a talk in Italian with help, if necessary, during tea. Then a rather more
serious study of grammar, useful phrases, pronunciation and a reading, in which all take
part, from a piece of Italian literature.
There is plenty of laughter, and reminiscences of trips to Italy are freely exchanged.
The members are now of various grades of proficiency, but our aim is to give everyone
their fair share of attention. Newcomers who have a real purpose in learning Italian will
be warmly welcomed into the group.
Social history
This group looks at the history of a particular era, concentrating on some social detail.
Members are encouraged to research topics that appeal to themselves and then share their
findings with the rest of the group
